The Kalkaska Methodist Church Community Meal Program began over 10 years ago when one member of the church decided that there was more that our church could do for people in our community that were hungry, she stood up in church that Sunday to announce she was going to start the community meal program and the church rallied behind her and her idea! This program is included on the church line item, but currently is funded by donations in money weekly/monthly and from donations of produce from Cherry Street Market in Kalkaksa Mi.
Currently the program serves a prepared meal weekly on Wednesdays from 5-6 PM.
In the month of May 2017 the community meals program served 431 meals including a few take outs. They do this with about 12 regular volunteers each week. They need some help though, each week these volunteers are tired and the clean up is always in need. They are looking for individuals that can help to mop floors, wash dishes, put away dishes, and take out trash and boxes.
